Some words can be translated. But their real meaning can only be lived.
Matt was born in Thailand but grew up in Australia. When he returned and spent years learning Muay Thai at Wor Watthana in Isaan, he began to realise that the language of fighting carried far more than simple instructions.
Words like jungwat do not only describe timing. They hold ways of seeing the fight. They carry rhythm, feeling and knowledge passed between generations of Thai fighters and teachers. Translate the word too quickly and its deeper meaning can disappear.
Jungwat is a major project from Fightlore and Mahasanae Breakdowns exploring the words of fighting in Thailand—and the worlds of meaning held inside them. Through lived experience, fight study, conversations, stories and footage, the project will explore how Thai fighters understand ideas that English cannot always explain cleanly.
Members of Between Rounds will be able to follow the project as it develops:
- Early research and field notes
- Stories from Matt’s years learning in Isaan
- Technical and cultural interpretations
- Conversations surrounding each word
- Unreleased footage and developing ideas
- Opportunities to ask questions and shape what is explored
- First access to new chapters and finished releases
You will not only receive the final project. You will be inside the room while Fightlore and Mahasanae build it. Because understanding the word can change how you understand the fight.
